Are you dreaming of your next getaway? With endless opportunities for outdoor adventure and many pet-friendly spaces, Parksville is the perfect place to travel with your canine friends. Here are some of our favourite pooch-approved activities!
WHAT TO DO
Take Your Pup For a Hike
Enjoy some incredible scenery as you explore the endless trails and parks around Parksville. Top Bridge Regional Trail is a 5-kilometre trail that connects Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park with the Top Bridge Crossing, a magnificent suspension bridge that spans the Englishman River. Or take a stroll to Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park, which has an easy 3.2-kilometre trail that boasts unparalleled views of the magnificent waterfall and nature.
Enjoy An Afternoon at The Dog Park
Qualicum Beach Offleash Dog Park is a popular spot where local and visiting dogs alike run and play. This lengthy network of wide, sun-dappled forest trails meander through several acres of pristine woodland offering cool shade or partial relief from the rain. If you take the time to explore the entire trail network, you can stretch your walk to out 60 minutes. Please note that there is no water available at this park, so be sure to pack some with you for your pooch, who will no doubt be in need of a liquid refreshment after investigating all the wonders of this delightful place.
Walk Along the Beach
Grab a leash and spend the day walking along the sandy shores of Parksville and Qualicum Beach. Please note that pets are not permitted in the day-use area at Rathtrevor Beach, however, they are welcome on the beach near the campgrounds. During the Brant geese migration period every spring, dogs are not permitted in the Parksville and Qualicum Beach Wildlife Management Area.
WHAT TO BRING
Up-To-Date Identification
No matter how careful you are, pets can escape and get lost in unfamiliar locations. That’s why you should ensure that your pet has an updated I.D. tag on his or her collar that includes your cell number. If your pet dashes without its collar, a microchip provides a backup so that veterinary clinics, shelters, and animal control centers can scan your pet and find out how to reach you.
Carrier
It’s always best to have your pet in a well-ventilated carrier. It should have enough room to allow your pet to stand, turn around and lay down, and remember to always provide fresh water.
Comforts of Home
Pets can get a little freaked out by the sudden change of their surroundings. Help to minimize the disruption by maintaining some level of familiarity by bringing some of your pet’s usual toys, food and bedding.
