Spring Showers Sunrise Style – No Umbrellas Needed
It’s raining; it’s pouring – and no one is snoring. Here on the west coast, we’re used to wet weather, but it doesn’t slow us down one bit. Whether your island vacation is damper than expected or you’re a local looking to fill the rainy season, the Oceanside area is literally overflowing with ways to spend those rain-filled days.
Some better-known tourist hot spots are mostly undercover and perfect for waiting out the downpour. Head out to Coombs and hit the famous Old Country Market and surrounding area, almost all of which is indoors or covered. Shop the market for local artisan goods, and explore the surrounding area’s boutique shops, which carry everything from books to clothes to artwork and more! Just don’t expect to see any goats on the roof; in wet weather the goats can be found on their hillside home behind Cuckoo’s Trattoria, where they can stay dry in their goat huts.
While out in Coombs, head out to Butterfly World. It’s completely enclosed and is kept at tropical temperatures for the creatures who call Butterfly World home, so it’s the perfect place to warm up while waiting for the storm to pass.
What better way to spend a rainy day than to take in a show? Head to the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach, where ECHO Players regale audiences with live performances of quirky tales you’ll never find on Broadway. From April 18th to May 5th, the Village Theatre and ECHO Players will be running Almost, Maine a whimsical tale of small-town residents looking for love under the magic of the northern lights. If you’re island-bound over summer vacation, check out Bard to Broadway and their variety of summer productions.
Vancouver Island is a haven for artists and art-lovers alike, and The Old School House Arts Centre in Qualicum caters to both. The Old School House houses resident artists, runs exhibitions featuring a variety of local artists across a range of mediums, and offers both events and classes regularly. Browse their upcoming exhibitions or just stop in and take a look around; either way you won’t be disappointed. For music lovers, TOSH offers Music on Sundays, showcasing a different musician every week.
Ditch the downpour and treat yourself to some rest and relaxation at Natural Synergy Day Spa. A local favourite, Synergy offers a range of services, including a selection of massage styles, facials, body treatments, esthetic services, and more. Skip the stormy weather altogether by booking their mobile spa service and they’ll come to you!
